The Moravian Church has a strong history of mission, being one of the first Protestant groups to send out missionaries. At Christ Church, we believe that God calls us to live out our faith through service to those in need. As such, we have supported a wide variety of local and international mission initiatives. Our international work is done in conjunction with the Moravian Board of World Missions. We raise funds in a variety of ways including concerts and other special events, as well as donating much of the proceeds from our Christmas Eve offerings. If you are interested in helping us to make a difference in our World, we would welcome your participation in our mission projects. Contact the church office, 403-271-2700, if you are interested in any of the following mission opportunities.
Mustard Seed: We gather several times a year to make bag lunches for Mustard Seed residents.
Food Bank: Food drives for the Calgary Food Bank or the Veteran’s Food Bank take place several times a year.
Sri-Lanka Post-Tsunami Relief: Support for a small fishing village in Sri-Lanka is provided by a member of our congregation through donations of empty beverage containers. Empty beverage containers may be dropped of at the church.
Rajpur Moravian Institute: Foster Care Project & Lasting Legacy Fund
Moravian Church of Western Tanzania: Orphan Program & Adopt a Village
Moravian Church of Cuba: Church Development and Mission Work
Worship & Adult Spiritual Education
Sunday Worship Services are held at 10:30 am with coffee and fellowship following the service. Visitors are most welcome and you will find our congregation to be warm and friendly. An adult Bible Study group meets on Sundays at 9:30 am, prior to the service. Seasonal Bible Study opportunities are offered during Advent and Lent, and adult retreats are offered several times a year.
Several activities are available for young people at Christ Church. During Sunday service, our Pastor conducts a short children’s sermon before young people head off to Sunday School for the rest of the service. Our Youth Group (Gr 7 to Post High) meets on the first and third Thursday of the month. Week long summer camps are held for grades one through twelve at Camp Van Es, the Moravian Church Camp near Edmonton. Weekend retreats for high school and post high students take place intermittently at Camp Van Es.
Christian fellowship is an important aspect of life at Christ Church. Along with coffee time after each service, we offer several social events throughout the year, including Easter Morning Breakfast and a western lunch following a special Stampede service. We also have an active +55 Group with monthly activities including canasta at the church on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at 1:00 pm. Please see the church calendar and newsletter for details and times of fellowship activities.
Women’s Fellowship meets monthly, usually the first Wednesday of the month. Along with business items, these meetings involve a devotional time and a special activity. Members of this group provide mutual support and encouragement during difficult and special times. Women’s Fellowship also raises funds to support the church through bake sales, candle making and catering of funerals and special events. Some members of Women’s Fellowship knit items which are donated to those in need. Their projects have included prayer shawls, dolls and items of clothing. New participants are always welcome.
If you are interested in meeting with a group of like minded men, then come along to Men’s Breakfast, generally the first Saturday of the month at 8:30 am. Discussion topics are many and varied and you may participate or just listen. Our breakfasts are bountiful and your small breakfast donation goes to a charity of our selection. We presently have both members and nonmembers of the church and would be glad to have you join us. We would enjoy getting to know you.
Women’s Tea meets monthly, usually the fourth Friday of the month at 1:15 pm, for tea and conversation that nourishes both the body and soul. Discussion topics vary and nonmembers of the church are most welcome.
If you have seen the big white tent at the corner of Southland and Acadia Drives during the first week of June, then you likely know about our Annual Garage Sale which has evolved from a small rummage sale in the church basement to a large community event. This is more than an opportunity to raise funds for church programs and missions. It allows us to give back to our neighbours. The week leading up to the garage sale is a fun fellowship time as members and friends gather together in preparation for the big sale on Saturday. If you are interested in donating items or volunteering time for this event, please contact our church office, 403-271-2700.
